A damaged or severely worn swimming pool will cast a dark cloud over your homes landscape and dampen the enjoyment you get from swimming in your pool.

A damaged pool exterior or interior increases the pools maintenance expenses – not to mention wasting money on expensive water treatment chemicals. Pools with damaged interiors also put family and friends at risk of injury – Don’t make your pool become a bad memory.

Old Marble Sheen

Pool repairs on Marble – Quartzon and Pebble Rendered Pools

Pools with rendered interiors are prone to concrete pool problems such as algae attack if left untreated. The picture above is of a marble sheen pool that has been left untreat and algae has moved in. You can see the bare concrete beneath the the colored surface.

The swimming pool water needs to be treated with chemicals the whole year through to avoid algae from taking hold on the rendered surface. Once the algae has taken hold, water treatment with algaecide becomes an expensive exercise that does nothing to fix the problem. The picture below shows discoloration in the pools interior surface - one that can't be removed by any chemicals or scrubbing - indicating an advanced stage of algae attack and deterioration.

Poll Algae

What begins to happen is the render surface will become loose leaving holes, worn areas and drummy spots that sound hollow when tapped. This is because the rendered surface is no longer attached to the underlying concrete due to the algae growing deep roots into the render and pulling it away from the concrete. When this happens, a pool plaster repair job is in order. This can only be done by emptying the pool water, chipping off all loose render and reapplying the same render in those areas. If the damage is extensive, completely resurfacing the whole pool may be the way to go so the interior once again looks uniformed.

crack under coping

Fully Tiled Concrete Pools

Fully tiled pools can also suffer from algae attack, rusting steel rods and structural cracks too. But the most common pool repairs carried out on fully tiled pools are tiles coming loose and falling off. When you see this happening, it’s a wise choice to call us ASAP – Because if left untreated, the pressure of the pools water will force the water under these tiles, causing more and more tiles to come loose – and before you know it, you’ll have to re-tile the whole pool again. A costly procedure.

Another common problem with tiled pools is cracks appearing on the grout joint directly between the underside of the coping, and at the top of the first row of tiles, as seen in the picture above. This is due to a combination of two things - normal movement of the pool itself and the surrounding ground around it over a period of time – and that the pool coping may actually be coming loose or is already loose. Minor movement of the pool is always going to happen – but it happens slowly over a long period of time.  This swimming pool repair job is a common one, and can be solved by removing loose coping pieces and sticking them down again, then re-grouting all joints involved.

Pool Rust

Rust stains

Furthermore, rust removal from pools is another common pool repairs job we carry out. Rust in concrete pools develops from the rio re-enforcement steel rods inside the concrete shell of the pool.

You will notice in the center of the picture above a small rust colored stains on the interior of the pool where water has entered micro cracks in the concrete. The water comes in contact with the steel rods inside the concrete, corroding the steel and causing it to expand inside the concrete. This is not a good thing and needs to be repaired straight away. If not, the rust will continue to spread, severely weakening the pools structure – creating even more damage that will end up being be an expensive swimming pool repair job. If you see a rust colored stain like the one in the picture above - Have it looked at straight away.

Pool crack

Structural cracks

Occasionally we see pools that have 2 or more cracks running vertically from the water line to the bottom of the pool. Usually about halfway along the walls, these cracks are always wider at the top then at the bottom, thus causing the pool to loose water too.  A pool in this state is basically in the process of breaking in half, requiring a major pool crack repair job to be done.

What normally causes this is the non-uniformed settlement of the ground under the pool.  Which basically means, through wet and dry spells from the weather, that the ground under the pool has sunken away from beneath the pool – thus making the deep end of the pool heavier than the shallow end. When this happens, the concrete shell of the pool can no longer support the difference in weight and then cracks in the middle. Pool Repairs like this need to be done by experienced contractors who will underpin the pool, and then literally “glue” the pool back together.

If you notice any faults in your pool as described above and in the picture above - and wish to have it repaired or upgraded – please feel free to help us give your pool a new lease of life.
